Issues related to the historical origin, fundamental characteristics and administrative organization of the modern state, the functioning of political institutions and the processes of legitimization of political power are examined. Also of interest are the different and largely conflicting theoretical approaches to the modern state and the state-society relationship: that of political liberalism, the Weberian view, the Marxist, pluralist, neo-institutional, feminist views, the theory of power elites, etc. Emphasis is also given to current social developments and changes, as well as to new models of governance as they are shaped by processes such as economic liberalization and the internationalization of political decision-making mechanisms.
