The different methodological techniques of data collection (e.g. participant observation, ethnography, biographical-narrative interview, expert interviews, in-depth interview, semi-structured interview, focus groups, etc.), the combination and complementarity of different types of empirical material (e.g. written evidence and oral sources) and the ethical and political issues raised by the study of various individuals and social groups, etc. will be critically analyzed. For this reason, some classic sociological texts will be presented, conceptual proposals and definitions will be sought and various methodological concerns that expose different methodological logics and technical strategies regarding the design and execution of a qualitative research will be analyzed. Finally, the process of processing qualitative data will be discussed, namely their analysis and interpretation and the connection of sociological interpretation with broader issues of theory and methodology of the social sciences. The evaluation and the final grade will result from the systematic and active participation in the meetings, from the study of the relevant bibliography and the overall course material and from the final written seminar paper. In the lectures, extensive use is made of printed, visual and audio material from the fields of current affairs, but also from the past, depending on the topic under investigation (e.g. presentation of the self, chronically ill people, unemployment, social stigmatization, etc.). Also, films with corresponding content are shown in order to allow discussion and exchange of views among the students.
