Subject of the Master's Degree:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The aim of the Postgraduate Studies Program of the Department of Sociology is to train scientists, researchers and executives of social organizations, local authorities, NGOs, institutes and businesses in the social sector in critical areas of social development and cohesion. In addition, the Postgraduate Studies Program aims to a) familiarize students with the thematic axes of: social organization, social inequalities and social exclusion, employment and social development policies, delinquency and anti-crime policy as well as b) acquire specialized knowledge in the theory and methodology of social research and mainly its technical and analytical tools for the study and scientific deepening of theoretical and applied fields of social development. Training in conducting applied social research in the above thematic areas includes the precise formulation of research questions and hypotheses, the development of a research plan and research techniques, the data collection process as well as their qualitative and quantitative processing. Finally, the aim is to elaborate alternative models of social development, based on local and regional specificities, with the aim of promoting the social and economic integration of socially vulnerable groups and reducing risks for their social marginalization.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Knowledge and Skills provided by the MSP:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

By consolidating the analytical and synthetic nature of the postgraduate program as well as by connecting the theoretical with the research and applied courses, students acquire knowledge and develop skills in the following areas:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

a. They acquire knowledge regarding the thematic axes analyzed above but also in skills of methodological design, social analysis and conducting applied social research in the thematic fields. This training includes the precise formulation of research questions and hypotheses, the result of a thorough theoretical deepening in the thematic fields, the development of a research plan and research techniques, the process of data collection, their qualitative and quantitative processing and, finally, the writing of the results, some of which can be published after collaboration with the teachers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

b. Promoting approaches that bridge theory with empirical research, ensuring theoretical deepening and the empirically documented formulation of social cohesion and development policies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

c. Familiarization and consolidation of specialized quantitative and qualitative data analysis techniques with a main focus on secondary data analysis and primary research.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

 d. In the application of the above skills in the design, organization and management of social development programs as well as in the formulation of new policies of European, national and regional governance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

e. In the elaboration of proposals for alternative models of social development, based on local and regional specificities, with the aim of promoting the social and economic integration of socially vulnerable groups and reducing risks of social marginalization.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The program is interdisciplinary in the sense that it is not limited exclusively to the further specialization of Sociologists but to the familiarization with general and specific subjects of Sociology and to the learning of the methods and techniques of the research process of a wider range of Social Scientists as well as Graduates of the Humanities. Also, the Sociologists who attend this program enrich their knowledge in specific issues of Sociology and Empirical Research. In this sense, the areas of professional employment of graduates extend to a very wide range of specialties and institutions in both the public and private sectors.
