History and Scientific Profile

The Department of Sociology was established in 1999 and is affiliated with the School of Social Sciences at the University of the Aegean, located in Mytilene, Greece.

The Department’s curriculum offers a comprehensive range of courses designed to provide young sociologists with a multifaceted academic education and professional training. It encompasses both classical and contemporary sociological theory, as well as applied sociology and empirical social research. The program covers diverse thematic areas, including Sociological Theory, Social Research Methods, Historical Comparative Analysis, Social Policy and Political Sociology, Urban Sociology, Sociology of Culture and the Environment, Sociology of Institutions, European Union Policies, Social Psychology, Sociology of Education, and Criminology.

Particular emphasis is placed on methodological training. Courses in qualitative and quantitative research methods, statistics, informatics, and social demography are systematically taught, while students are actively involved in empirical social research projects that enhance their analytical and research skills.

Within this academic framework, students engage critically with major contemporary social issues such as social movements, the historical development and transformation of the welfare state, labor market changes, migration policies, social conflicts and war, processes of social identity formation and socialization, health management, and mechanisms of labor market inclusion and exclusion.

The Department also offers courses in International and European Law, Sociology Teaching Methodology and Pedagogy, English Language and Terminology, and provides opportunities for professional internships in a variety of social institutions, aiming to strengthen graduates’ professional prospects and applied competencies.

At postgraduate level, the Department successfully runs three Master’s programs that attract graduates from universities across Greece. These include:

the inter-institutional Master’s program Applied – Clinical Sociology and Art
These program address key issues in contemporary social theory and empirical sociological research, promoting advanced academic training and interdisciplinary perspectives.

The Department places strong emphasis on the integration of New Information and Communication Technologies in both teaching and research. It is supported by modern technological infrastructure that facilitates high-quality educational and research activities.

Moreover, the Department actively participates in the Erasmus Program, hosting international students annually and fostering academic exchange within the European Higher Education Area. Through international research collaborations, academic workshops, seminars, and conferences, the Department promotes interdisciplinarity, global academic networking, and the advancement of sociological research.
