The course “Classical Sociological Theory” focuses on the fundamental ideas and works of the pioneering sociologists who shaped the field of sociology in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Some of the key theorists that will be studied: Auguste Comte: Considered the ”father of sociology,” Comte believed that society could be studied through scientific methods and promoted the idea of “positive sociology.“ Emile Durkheim: Durkheim studied social class, religion, education, and other social phenomena, emphasizing the concept of ”social reality.” Karl Marx: Marx analyzed class conflicts and capitalist society, focusing on the concept of ”alienation” and the critique of capitalism. Max Weber: Weber studied power, bureaucracy, religion, and economics, emphasizing the understanding of the social world through subjective interpretations.
