Over the past decades in Greece, sociology — as a scientific field devoted to the systematic study, interpretation, and practical engagement with social phenomena — has steadily expanded the professional horizons available to young graduates. While sociologists often need to actively assert their professional role, they increasingly occupy a meaningful position within the post-crisis, post-pandemic, socio-economic landscape: an emerging economy grounded in knowledge, innovation, and high-quality social services provided by a modern, efficient, and citizen-oriented welfare state.
Across the public sector, local government, non-governmental organizations, and private enterprises, new professional roles are being developed that require advanced specialization, adaptability, research competence, collaborative skills, and strong analytical and communicative capacities. The rapid restructuring of the state — including transformations in the labour market, social insurance systems, public health services, social welfare provision, crime and substance abuse prevention policies, and social research — has generated an increasing demand for highly trained social science professionals capable of responding to complex and evolving social challenges. Academic programs that combine rigorous theoretical training with empirical research skills and the use of contemporary methodologies and technologies are essential prerequisites for participation in this new labour market and for contributing to its qualitative development. At the Department of Sociology of the University of the Aegean, students are systematically introduced to this evolving professional environment. Through a comprehensive curriculum, they are prepared to critically engage with contemporary social realities, develop professional confidence, and apply sociological knowledge in diverse and demanding professional contexts.
Graduates of the Department may pursue careers in a wide range of fields, including:
- Senior administrative and scientific positions in public institutions such as ministries, decentralized administrations, hospitals, and health and social services, addressing issues of social policy, health, social security, employment, welfare, and crime or substance abuse prevention, as well as participating in research activities related to national and European social programs.
- Advisory, executive, and scientific roles within local government bodies (municipalities and regional authorities), focusing on local development strategies, social cohesion, and the reduction of social exclusion.
- Educational organizations and institutions involved in migration, integration, and social inclusion policies.
- Social services, cultural and sports organizations, and media institutions, providing sociological expertise for program design, policy analysis, and public communication.
- Research design and evaluation roles in major national and European research projects, particularly those related to regional development and the socio-economic dynamics of island and peripheral areas.
- Teaching positions in sociology and social sciences in secondary education, adult education, and other educational contexts.
- Professional roles in media organizations, especially in the development and production of socially oriented programs.
- Positions within European Union institutions and services, contributing to the design and implementation of social, educational, and employment-related policies and programs.
- Employment in polling, social research, evaluation, and consulting companies involved in applied research and European-funded initiatives.
- Specialist roles in non-governmental organizations, institutes, and foundations addressing issues such as social equality, migration, environmental sustainability, cultural development, and political participation, as well as in Lifelong Learning Institutes, Vocational Training Centers, and Second Chance Schools.
The above demonstrates that sociology in contemporary Greece offers dynamic, creative, and socially meaningful professional opportunities. The Department of Sociology of the University of the Aegean was established and continues to develop with the aim of educating highly qualified social scientists who are able to critically engage with social transformations and actively contribute to social knowledge, policy development, and societal progress.
